JCJDC Seeks Nominations for Annual Business Awards

The Jefferson County Job Development Corporation takes great pleasure in recognizing the County's entrepreneurial activities and those individuals who have been successful in meeting the challenges of starting up and growing a business. For the third year, the JCJDC is sponsoring two awards - the Business of Excellence Award and the New Business Venture Award.

The Business of Excellence Award has new criteria and will recognize a Jefferson County business that has expanded opportunities by developing new or improved products and services as a result of employing advanced innovations and/or technologies.

The New Business Venture Award will recognize a Jefferson County company that has been established for at least two years but not more than four years. The entrepreneurs applying must demonstrate that their business plans are being implemented and effective in the growth of their businesses.

The finalists will be presented and the Awards' winners announced at the JCJDC's Annual Membership meeting to be held in late January 2010. Finalists will receive a professionally produced video of their business, a complimentary one year JCJDC membership, and the opportunity to apply, without fee, for the New York's Creative Core $200,000 Emerging Business Competition.
Winners of the JCJDC competitions will each receive $1000.

Application forms can be obtained by calling the JCJDC office at 782-5865, or by downloading the forms from the web site www.jcjdc.net. All entries must be in the JCJDC offices no later than December 9, 2009.


David J. Zembiec Selected as Deputy Director

Donald C. Alexander as Chief Executive Officer of the Jefferson County Job Development Corporation, the Jefferson County Industrial Development Agency, and the Jefferson County Local Development Corporation announced the hiring of David J. Zembiec as Deputy Director of the two agencies.

Mr. Zembiec has been serving as the Director of Community Development for the NYS Tug Hill Commission. The Commission provides grassroots technical assistance and training to Tug Hill's rural communities in the areas of land use planning, community economic development, and natural resource management.

In his 19 years at the Commission, Mr. Zembiec has assisted municipalities and non-profits with organizational development, strategic planning, fundraising, and implementation of a variety of community and economic development projects including downtown revitalization, tourism development and promotion, and recreational development. He currently serves, serves as North Country Regional V.P. on the NYS Urban Council, chairs the New York Main Street Alliance, and sits on the Jefferson County Job Development Corporation's Marketing Council. Prior to the Commission, Mr. Zembiec worked several years in non-profit management. He has a Masters in Public Administration from SUNY Brockport.

Mr. Alexander said, "We were fortunate to have a good number of qualified candidates apply for the position. However, David's vast experience in and knowledge of the economic and community development activities in Jefferson County as well the tri-county region, made him the most qualified for the position." Mr. Zembiec is expected to begin his new duties on Thursday, November 12, 2009.


JCIDA approves loan for a YMCA Day Care Facility

At the July 2, 2009 meeting of the Jefferson County Industrial Development Agency (JCIDA) the Board of Directors approved a $200,000 Revolving Loan Fund loan to the Watertown Family YMCA for the purpose of opening a licensed full day child care facility. The proposed facility is located at 514 Washington St, Watertown and is expected to be operating by fall of 2010. It is projected that the day care will accommodate 80 children and employ 22 full time staff.

The JCIDA Board also approved a Sale Leaseback agreement with J. Scott Corp., owner of Pleasant Night Inn, West Carthage.


JCIDA approves Microenterprise Loan

At the June 4, 2009 meeting of the Jefferson County Industrial Development Agency (JCIDA) the Board of Directors approved a $40,000 Microenterprise Loan to Depauville Village Market, Inc. for working capital in anticipation of the businesses expansion in 2010. The expansion is expected to create 4 full time positions.


JCIDA Board of Directors Approve Two Micro Loans

At the April 2, 2009 meeting of the Jefferson County Industrial Development Agency (JCIDA) the Board of Directors approved the following:

- A $20,250 Microenterprise Loan to Kevin Hutt, for the purchase of Robo-Spray, a pressure cleaning business located in Antwerp. Total project is $71,000 and is expected to create 5 jobs by year two of operation.
- A $12,000 Microenterprise Loan to BDJKR/Adams Country Club to assist with Spring start-up costs.
- A sale-leaseback agreement with Mimakar, Inc. to assist with the renovations of a building located in Cape Vincent which is part of a downtown revitalization effort.
- Two sale-leaseback agreements to Washington Summit Associates, LLC of Carthage for the purpose of building two more medical office buildings on the Washington Summit Medical and Professional Development site, located in Watertown.

The JCIDA Board also approved three applications for Rural Business Enterprise Grants (RBEG)from the US Department of Agriculture.

- A RBEG application will be submitted for $99,000. These funds will be used to support the acquisition of equipment on behalf of North Country Farms, LLC to increase capacity of its grain milking operation.
- Another RBEG application in the amount of $94,000 will be submitted. Funds will assist with workforce skill development for our local labor force.
- The third RBEG request of $200,000, if granted, will be used to further develop the JCIDA Revolving Loan Fund.


The "Apple of Your Eye" Photography Contest

The Central Upstate Regional Alliance's "Apple of Your Eye" photography contest was recently announced. The year-long competition is meant to highlight the New York's Creative Core region through the eyes of those who love it. The "Apple of Your Eye" photography contest challenges people to explore the character and places they value in this region.

Each month, a single, winning image from the pool of submissions will be selected as the image of the month. Your image will:

be part of an exhibit that will welcome and showcase our region to thousands of people.
- be displayed at Syracuse Hancock International Airport and at Carousel Center.
- appear in our monthly newsletter or e-blast, received by hundreds of Creative Core supporters.
- appear as that month's image in an annual calendar.
- be highlighted on the Creative Core V-tour in on our social networks.

Participation in the competition is open to the public. If you live, work, visit or dream here, this is your opportunity to capture what makes this region beautiful and special to you! Entrants do not have to currently live in the Central Upstate New York region (Cayuga, Cortland, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, Seneca, St. Lawrence and Tompkins Counties}. However, all images submitted must be original work and must be taken within the region. Photographs entered in the contest will be judged on their artistic expression, creativity and originality and the quality of the image.

Submissions to the competition are due by the 15th of each month to be eligible for the following month's contest. This is a digital photography competition.
