Fort Drum
Jefferson County is home to Fort Drum, the fourth-largest military installation in the United States. The 4,700 jobs that the base creates as well as its $2.2 billion annual impact it has on the local economy are both strong indications that Fort Drum is vital to the region’s growth and development.
Another benefit Jefferson County takes from Fort Drum’s presence is that when soldiers retire from service, as many as 29% of them stay in the area. So, not only does the constant amount of soldiers serving at the base keep the County’s economy running, but they do so even after their time at the base is done.
